Interesting drinks worth trying – No.4 Aguardente de Medronho
Some call it firewater, and despite the fact it comes from the strawberry tree, taste of strawberries it does not. Our fourth drink worth trying is the intriguing Portuguese tipple, Aguardente de Medronho
The scientific name for the ‘strawberry tree’ is Arbutus unedo and it originates from the Mediterranean and Ireland. The small tree bears berries that are ignored by most because they have a bland taste. All but the Portuguese, who have had the good grace to turn them into drink. The result is a strong spirit, not dissimilar to a fruit brandy, produced in the rural regions of Portugal, generally by farmers. With no commercial plantation of the fruit and trees, the age and heritage of this drink is what keeps people coming back for more.
At around 50% ABV , it may seem a little strong to start the day with, but those living in the rural production areas are said to have Aguardente de Medronho for breakfast, as a way to get them going for the day. The drink takes on a new name – Melosa – when it is mixed with honey, which makes the whole experience sweeter. And those who call it firewater are referring to the burning sensation that engulfs the senses upon drinking this potent stuff.
